Custom Christmas iron-on patches are an easy way to turn a plain sweatshirt, tote, or stocking into something personal. They also work for a whole group, like a church choir, a classroom, or a team holiday party. Most of the planning is picking a design that reads well at small size and choosing the right backing for the item.

Can you get custom Christmas iron-on patches made, and how early should you order?

Yes. We make custom Christmas iron-on patches from your artwork, in as few as one piece, with a free digital proof in 24-48 hours. Order early. You can share your must-have-by date when you order, and we will keep it in mind. Rush is available on request for an added fee.

Christmas iron-on patch ideas that work

Holiday designs look best when they are simple and recognizable. Here are some ideas for gifts and group events:

  • Classic shapes: a wreath, candy cane, ornament, stocking, or gingerbread figure
  • Ugly-sweater style: a reindeer face, a snowman in a scarf, a string of lights, a plate of cookies
  • Names and short phrases: "Merry," "Naughty," "Nice," or a family name for matching sweatshirts
  • Group badges: a school, church, or company logo with a small snowflake or holly border
  • Pet patches: a dog or cat in a Santa hat for gift bags and pet sweaters

Send original artwork or designs you have the rights to. If you have a sketch, a photo of what you want, or a rough idea in words, send it and we will build the proof from there.

For more holiday looks and style options, see our Christmas patches page.

Which patch type should you pick?

Pick the type by how much detail the design has and how you want it to feel.

  • Embroidered patches: a common choice for logos, names, and holiday art. Thread gives clean edges and a classic look.
  • Woven patches: made with finer thread, which generally suits small details and thin lettering.
  • PVC patches: raised, rubbery, and bold in color. Good for a wreath or ornament with a modern look.
  • Chenille patches: thick yarn stitched onto a felt base fabric. Soft and textured, often used for a letter or a big shape. Chenille works best with simple, bold designs. See chenille patches for more.

If you are not sure, embroidered patches are a good starting point for most holiday designs.

Design tips for small holiday text

Small text is the most common problem on holiday patches. A few rules help:

  • Keep words short. One or two words read better than a full greeting.
  • Use thick, plain letters instead of thin script.
  • Leave space between letters and between lines.
  • Limit the number of colors. Red, green, white, and one accent is plenty.
  • Avoid tiny details like snowflakes inside a letter. They can fill in with thread and turn to a blur.

If your text is small, the free proof is the place to check it. Look at the proof on your phone at actual size, not zoomed in. If it is hard to read there, ask us to simplify or enlarge it.

Where iron-on works, and where to use something else

Iron-on backing uses heat-activated glue, so it needs a fabric that can take heat. It usually suits cotton, denim, canvas, and sturdy cotton blends. It is risky on:

  • Nylon, polyester fleece, and other synthetic fabrics that can melt or scorch
  • Velvet, satin, and other fabrics that can mark from heat
  • Chunky or loose knits, where the patch has little flat surface to bond to
  • Waxed, coated, or waterproof fabrics

Holiday sweaters and stockings are often exactly these materials. Test on a hidden spot first, and use a pressing cloth between the iron and the patch. Our full guide on how to apply iron-on patches covers temperature, timing, and knits step by step, so we will not repeat it here.

For some items, a different backing is the better call:

  • Stockings and knit sweaters: sew-on is often a better fit than iron-on, since it needs no heat on the fabric.
  • Items you want to swap: Velcro can work if you want to move a patch between items or take it off for the season.
  • Quick temporary use: peel and stick can work for a short event, but check it on your fabric first.

You can choose the backing when you order. If you are unsure, tell us the item and fabric and we will suggest one. You can also see all options on our iron-on patches page.

How to order in time for the holidays

Holiday orders have a hard end date, so plan backward from the day you need them in hand. A simple checklist helps:

  • Decide the item and the fabric first, so the backing is right.
  • Send artwork or a clear description as early as you can.
  • You can share your must-have-by date when you place the order.
  • We send your free proof within 24-48 hours. Review it and approve it quickly, since slow approvals can push your date back.
  • Ask about rush if your date is close. It is available on request for an added fee, and it doesn't guarantee a specific delivery date.

Shipping is free worldwide on every order, and there is no minimum. You can order one patch for a gift or a full batch for a group.

Ready to start? Order custom iron-on patches and send us your design, and your must-have-by date if you have one. Your free proof comes first.

FAQs

Is there a minimum order for custom Christmas patches?▾
No. You can order as few as one piece. That works for a single gift or a larger holiday batch.
Can I use my own drawing or logo?▾
Yes. Send a sketch, a photo, or a vector file if you have one. We build a digital proof from it so you can see the patch before anything is made.
Can I get matching patches for a family or group?▾
Yes. Order the same design in the quantity you need. If you want each person to have a different name, mention it when you order so we can set up the proof correctly.
What kind of artwork can I send?▾
Send original artwork or designs you have the rights to. A sketch, photo, or written description is fine as a starting point.
How do I see what the patch will look like before it is made?▾
We send a free digital proof within 24-48 hours. You can request changes to colors, size, or lettering before approving it.
What size should a Christmas patch be?▾
It depends on the item and the design. Patches with text usually need more room than a simple icon. Tell us where it will go, and we can suggest a size on your proof.
Can I change the backing after I order?▾
Yes, any time before you approve your artwork proof, so it is best to settle it early. Iron-on, Velcro, peel and stick, and sew-on are all available.
What if I need the patches by a certain date?▾
You can share your must-have-by date when you order. We can't promise delivery by a specific date, so order early. Rush is available on request for an added fee.
